The Historical Perspective

The golden age of curtain design was the nineteenth century. Any house which was considered respectable would have had over curtains, under curtains, shades and/or shutters, together with a valance or cornice box pelmet

An alternative way was to drape fabric on a substantial pole with heavy rings and ornate finials. Fringes and tie backs were also common, with many of the fringes quite elaborate

With the changes in taste, style, finance and window size a whole range of curtain design options is available to us today. The elaborate treatments as described above are still used for formal rooms in large houses. But curtains can still make all the difference to a room if they are carefully and tastefully installed

Linings and Interlinings

If you're using sheer or lightweight fabrics then you'll probably use the fabric on its own. Otherwise it is advisable to use a lining as part of your curtain design. They'll hang better, and also look better from outside. If you are using a thin fabric, or you just want your curtains to look fuller and richer, then use an interlining as well. This is a thick, fluffy lining which makes your curtains seem fuller and thicker, and also helps to insulate your room

How to choose your curtain design

?What sort of finish do you want

Simple or elaborate? Note that modern treatments tend to be simple (for example, single metal pole with integral track and plain curtains), while traditional ones can be more elaborate (heavy interlined curtains with fringe on the edges, with draped swags and tails).
Remember to choose a design which is keeping with your room style. So if you have a Victorian house, then you'll be safe if you base your window designs on Victorian ideas. Thick heavy poles were often used, or curtains with fabric draped along the top, such as drapes and side tails.
If your room is contemporary (such as minimalist) then a plain track can be used, or a metal pole (brushed steel or aluminum is common) with matching finials ends

How To Measure Curtains

General Information

The track or pole should be fixed in position before you take any measurements.
To optimise the light, the track or pole should extend 25cm at either side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn well back.
The track or pole should sit 15cm above the window to minimise light exposure
Measure the track or pole and not the window itself

?How To Measure

Measuring the Curtain Width

Identify your track from the 3 styles shown below

Straight track

Measure the overall width from end to end

Overlapping track
Measure the width from end to end including the overlap.
a + b = total width

Curtain pole
Measure the overall width of the pole between the ornamental finials.

Measuring the Curtain Length

Radiators, architraves and obstructive furniture or shelving should all be factors to consider when deciding on the length of your curtains. Choose your required length
  • a) window sill length - measure to 1cm above sill

  • b) below sill - approx 15cm below sill

  • c) break on the floor - measure to 1cm above floor

  • d) pool on the floor - measure to floor and add an extra 10-15cm

Straight & overlapping tracks
Measure from the top of the track to ensure the curtain covers it.

Curtain pole
To allow the pole to be seen above the curtains, measure from the small ring at the bottom of the curtain ring to your required length.

Tie top and tab top headings
Measure from the top of the pole to your required length. To minimise light exposure your pole should be positioned at least 15cm above the top of the window

Blinds

Roll Up Blinds

Roll up blinds are much more informal than Roman blinds and can also be pulled up tightly inside a recessed window so they give the maximum light
They can either roll up at the front or behind the blind, but if front rolling, it is advisable to line it with a contrasting fabric as it is clearly visible and creates a stylish look when rolled up. Roll up blinds work more efficiently with heavier fabrics

Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are made up of horizontal folds of fabrics, strengthened by steel rods sewn across the back, which pull up into a series of cascading pleats
They are fuller, and often look more sophisticated than roll up blinds but be aware they can block out some light when put inside a recessed window

?How To Measure Blinds

General Information

Decide if you want your blind to sit either inside or outside the window recess before taking your measurements
All our blinds come supplied with right hand pulls unless specified
All blinds are supplied complete with fittings and instructions
Hand-woven check fabrics may be restricted to a single width as it is not always possible to perfectly align the pattern straight across joining widths

Measuring Inside a Window Recess

Measure the length from the top to the bottom of the recess
Measure the width at the top of the recess where the blind is to be fitted

Not all windows are straight so take a series of measurements at different points. t’s important to record the lowest measurement to ensure the blind doesn’t catch when lowered

Measuring Outside a Window Recess
Measure the length from the required height above the window (approx 10-15cm) down to the required length (sill or below sill)
Measure the width of the window and add approximately 10-15cm on either side.

?How To Measure Pelmets & Valances

General Information

Taking potential light constraints into consideration, a valance or pelmet should measure to approximately 1/6th of the finished curtain length
The pelmet shelf must be fitted before the measurements are taken

Measuring the Length

To determine the length, divide the curtain length by six.
eg, if your finished curtain length is 150cm, the pelmet or valance should measure 25cm.
To determine the length for a shaped pelmet or valance, the measurement is taken from the top of the pelmet board to the midpoint of the arch. The sides of the pelmet or valance will then be made 20cm longer
eg, if your finished curtain length is 150cm, the pelmet or valance at the top of the arch will measure 25cm and the sides 45cm

Measuring the Width

To calculate the pelmet & valance width
measure the distance from the wall (a
along the front of the pelmet (b
and back to the wall again (c
Width of pelmet (cm) = a + b + c
