Site Plan
Located along the banks of a major river, the design is profoundly affected it's context, where the top of bank line for permanent structures bisects the site to create two developable plateaus. The design capitalizes on these constraints by locating the all-weather playfields in the lower floodplain plateau, positioned to optimal solar orientation as well as creating a natural amphitheatre for spectators. The L-shaped building configuration and orientation is derived from a desire to create an exterior athletics courtyard for students and staff, south and west facing sheltered from prevailing winter winds. The large site allows for the development of first class athletic facilities including an all weather eight-lane 400-metre track, an artificial turf field and two semi artificial practice fields. As part of the Rouge River corridor, the nature trails planned for this site will link to a system of trails that extend along the entire length of the Rouge River. Green building strategies will include retaining storm water for irrigation of the fields, using bio swales and retention ponds to improve storm water quality before it enters the Rouge River and restoring naturalized native planting along its banks.

First Floor Plan
The planning of the 4-storey building is organized on two axis, namely the 'Academic Axis' and the 'Athletic Axis'. The 'two axis' orientation allows the athletic areas of the school to be available for 24/7 use, controlled and locked off from the academic part of the building as desired. The two axes meet at the student forum, an open, double height central gathering space for the school. The forum is the Epicenter of the school, a place where athletics, academics and social activities casually converge. Adjacent rooms such as the lecture hall will serve the dual function of accommodating the school's students as well as serving as an orientation centre for visiting schools and teams. Administration areas of the school are strategically positioned to provide natural supervision and overview, particularly where main entrances are created. Within the athletic section of the school, the circulation system separates athletes from spectators, allowing for ticketed sporting events and security for athletes.

The 'Athletic Axis' extends upwards and above the ground floor to include specialized training functions such as weight training rooms. Overlooking both double gymnasiums, a central weight room will serve both student and visiting athletes, fully equipped with free weights and cross-training machines. In contrast, elite athletes will utilize the high performance training equipment of the adjacent varsity weight room that also overlooks the exterior athletic courtyard. A dedicated Coaching Centre provides a space for visiting coaches to work within the school and a space to hold individual or team meetings. Using the corridor system of the school, viewing gallery space is created over the competition gym to create a flexible zone of acceptable interface between students, visiting athletes and spectators. Also overlooking the gyms, a broadcast booth has been created for students with an interest in sports broadcasting and will also be used by coaches to record games for future review and scouting purposes.

In an effort to vertically link the school's athletic programming across all levels of the school, the third floor contains a double gymnasium that will be used exclusively for general physical education activities. It's location is purposefully separated from the two double gyms on the ground floor to ensure that athletic needs are met on a daily basis and uninterrupted by the expected programming demands of tournaments and other special events. General fitness for male and female students is also promoted on this floor level by the provision of a dedicated aerobics and dance studio. Nearby, a Communications Technology lab and the Physiology laboratory provide 'crossover' programming spaces where academic and athletic programs meet and reinforce each other. Capable of video production, the communication lab could be used to promote a healthy, active living initiative or serve as a studio for aspiring sports journalists. Similarly, the Physiology Lab can be used to study the kinetics of an individual athlete's performance or to conduct research for a health sciences paper.

Perched above the athletics courtyard, the library occupies a unique location within the school. Open, stretching, reaching, the library has been designed as a visual landmark/gateway to the campus, and a metaphor for the challenges of higher learning. Visually expressed on the school's exterior, the library is an outward extension to the community, an invitation to lifelong learning. With it's distinctive form, it will be recognizable as a beacon for the complex from as far as Highway 407. Internally the library will feature extensive seminar rooms and information technology geared to support distant learners and elite athletes, a place to work and meet with their instructors. To support the programming of the library, computer and science labs occupy the remainder of this floor level. Comparable to the labs located on the third floor, science and computer studies programming will emphasize 'crossover' opportunities where academic and athletic programs meet and reinforce each other in support of a unique curriculum.
